Founded in 1871, Wahpeton, the county seat of Richland County, is at the southern end of the Red River Valley. This is where the Bois de Sioux and the Ottertail rivers meet to form the "Red River of the North".
One of the nations largest producers of oats, Richland County also ranks first in the production of corn and hogs. Wheat, barley, sugar beets, and sunflowers are other crops adding to the economy. being mostly a agriculture community, Wahpeton is growing in the industrial sector by leaps and bounds.
Manufacturers of machinery, truck equipment, metal culverts, ceramics, draperies, knives, and much more are all making Wahpeton their homes.
Recreational activities is a big part of life in the Wahpeton area. Here you can find some of the best waterfowl hunting in the nation. Deer hunting also is a big thing in this neck of the woods. In the spring and summer months you can enjoy the Bois de Sioux Golf Course and get your fill of golf. This is a wonderful golf course to play.
Points of interest in Wahpeton included, Richland County Historical Society Museum, the most modern in the state to date. We also have Fort Abercrombie, a restored fort and museum where artifacts bring back memories of days past.

Elementary schools include Zimmerman and Central Elementary schools, Wahpeton also has Wahpeton Middle School, and the high school is Wahpeton Senior High School. North Dakota State College of Science is also located here in Wahpeton.
