Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Explore the Badlands, Preserved by our 26th President

Teddy Roosevelt It was in the fall of 1883 when Teddy Roosevelt first came to North Dakota on a hunting trip. By the time of his arrival, the last of the large Bison herds were disappearing, decimated from disease and hide hunters. Teddy was a lover of the "Great Outdoors". Becoming alarmed over the way the land was changing, Roosevelt thought to himself, "something has to be done to preserve our wildlife and the land on which these animals roamed".

His interest in ranching became very evident when he invested in the Maltese Cross Ranch. A year later he would establish the Elkhorn Ranch. Teddy really loved it out here in the Badlands. This was preparing him for his presidency in the future, without him even knowing it.

The Maltese Cross Cabin was Teddy's first home in North Dakota. Built during the winter of 1883-1884. Today visitors can tour this original cabin, Teddy once lived in. Tours are daily, mid-June through Labor Day. The rest of the year it is open to self-guided viewing.

The weather in the area can't be beat. Summers are very warm with temps in the 80's and 90's mostly, but there is that occasional 100+ degree day. Evenings have the tendency to get rather cool sometimes, but on the other hand temps can stay up in the 70's at night also, with high humidity's. Winters are usually cold, some years colder than others, we do have warming spells throughout the winter.

The site of the Little Missouri River, with all its gleaming colors, and the beauty of the Badlands, after becoming president, Teddy realized beautiful areas like this had to be preserved, so this is the reason for setting up the National Park System.

Here in the park you have the opportunity to watch wildlife at its best. Wild horses, bison, mule deer and elk. It's all here for everyone to enjoy and Cherish, for generations to come. There is no place like it in the world, Theodore Roosevelt National Park
