North Dakota Renewable and Alternative Fuels
Ethanol,Bio-Diesel, Wind and Hydro Power
Renewable and Alternative Fuels. In today's day and age with oil prices going thru the ceiling, topping $3.00 a gallon, it is time to really get serious about alternative fuels. Back when Jimmy Carter was President he signed into Law, legislation that would get the ball rolling. Then along came Ronald Reagen and bingo, he got rid of it. So the ball didn't roll very far.
The impact of today's world's energy picture is significant when it come to renewable fuels. This is not a new technology. Being around for over 125 years (Five Generations). Take wood for example, this resource was used for 90% of our energy needs way back when. Today not used much at all.
We Americans, have become so dependent on foreign oil, that we lost all insight of what the future was going to bring. Now it's time to settle down and work together and get this moving in the right direction, towards being less dependent on oil. Building new plants to make ethanol and biodiesel is a move in the right direction. This will create many jobs and help our economy to strengthen.
North Dakota is well behind neighboring states when it comes to the production of ethanol and bio-diesel. We now have 2 plants for ethanol under construction and more in the making. We have to mandate more laws about use of ethanol, we are also behind in this way.
With very low prices for fossil fuels in years past, has made it hard , if not almost impossible for the growth of renewable fuels. But in the crunch we are in, I think things will really get rolling. Over time we will get this done and not be as reliable on foreign oil. The sooner this gets done the better off everyone will be, especially our kids and grand kids.
Here in North Dakota, wind power is really taking off. Just outside town here where I live, in Valley City, there is one 200 Ft. wind turbine producing about 1.5 megawatts of power.
FPLN Energy a Florida Company, has finished the construction of a a 33 unit wind farm near Wilton, ND. Each produces 1.5 mega watts of power. These turbines are expected to generate enough electricity to supply 15,000 homes. All together the wind turbines here will generate 49.5 megawatts of power. Near Edgley and Kulm, ND. There are two wind farms producing 61.5 megawatts of power. What a site to see, these turbines spinning round and round producing renewable electricity.
Hydroelectric Power. Water is currently the leading renewable energy source used by electric utilities to generate electric power. Hydroelectric plants operate where suitable waterways are available. Generating 400,000 mega watts of power the Garrison Dam is the only hydroelectric plant in the state.
