North Dakota Fishing
The Finest Fishing in the Upper Midwest
Are you looking for some of the finest fishing in the upper Midwest? If so North Dakota lakes and rivers has what your looking for. Here we have some of the finest lakes for walleye fishing, northern pike, salmon, small mouth bass, and in the winter, ice fishing can't be beat on Devil's Lake for jumbo perch.
Fishing tournaments on Devil's Lake attract pros from all over the country. This lake is said to be one of the best walleye fisheries in the country, if not the very best.
Fishing the Red River of the North is one of the best places to go out and try your luck for channel catfish. Anglers from all over the country come here to try their luck catching these big fish. Don't be surprised if you latch on to a 20 - 30 pounder, if you do, hold on and enjoy the Adrenalin rush. In August, of every year, there is a catfish tournament known as "Cats Incredible" tournament. It is also a great place to try your luck walleye and northern pike fishing. It is not uncommon to catch walleyes in the 5 - 10 pound range. 2 - 3 pound fish are my favorite for eating, can't be beat.
Lake Sakakawea is the largest lake in North Dakota. It is a man made lake on the Missouri River System, offering many species of fish for the avid angler. Walleye, Northern Pike, Salmon, Small Mouth Bass, even Trout are ready to be caught in this great fishery. In the fall of the year get out there and be part of the smelt run, this is a very tasty little fish.
Valley City and Jamestown have some of the best reservoir fishing available. Jamestown Reservoir, Pipestem Reservoir, and Lake Ashtabula. Crappies, perch, walleye, small mouth bass, and an occasional northern pike can be part of the action on these great bodies of water. Ice fishing can also be very good , especially perch, crappie, walleye, and an occasional northern pike latching on to your hook. When hooking on to one of these trophy fish, hold on and enjoy the ride, it is a great feeling your not going to forget soon.
Below is a list of some of the smaller lakes and rivers in North Dakota, some of which produce great fishing.

River Fishing, A Great Pastime
River fishing is one of my favorite ways of relaxation and getting away from it all. After a long hard winter, after the ice breaks up on area rivers, I pack up and head to my favorite spring fishing holes. Usually just below the small dams we have on our local river, the Sheyenne River.
Here in Valley City, ND. where I hang my hat and call home, we have a great river winding through town with many fishing holes to try my luck at getting that elusive big walleye. We have two dams here in town and both produce great fishing at times.
I love sitting there below these dams and just jigging. Usually with a minnow or a night crawler, I find I have much better luck fishing like this. As it warms up going into summer I get out the crank baits and hope the fish cooperate with me. Usually it isn't long before a northern pike latches on.
Also early in the season when the water is not all that warm yet, we don't have to worry about catching them pesty bullhead. This is why I mainly fish in the river. When I fish in area lakes, I spend more time taking bullhead off my hooks than fishing.
When I go out I am mainly hoping to catch the mighty walleye. It is such an adrenalin rush when hooking onto a nice walleye. The biggest one I ever caught was around eight pounds, and what a battle it was. Like most bigger fish I catch I "catch and release", who knows, I may have a battle with him again some day.
When I get tired fishing below dams and want to change the way I fish, I go above and try my luck for northern pike lurking near the river banks. Usually taking but 4-5 casts, I hook onto a nice northern pike. As with most fish I catch, I return it to it's home.
Now for my favorite eating fish, the white bass - silver bass. They do put up a nice fight, but my main concern with them is eating. There is nothing better than smoked silver bass. They are also very easy to fillet, and fry up nice and are very tasty.
One thing I am not fond of while fishing North Dakota rivers and lakes is the fact we have lots of mosquito's. These little buggers can make a good fishing trip miserable. So always remember to take along skeeter spray, you will be glad you did.
Now after a few relaxing hours on the riverbank, taking in all the wildlife and breathing the freshest air in the USA, I decide it is time to pack up and head home. It was another great day, in the Great Outdoors of North Dakota.
