North Dakota is the most rural of all 50 states, with 90% of the land covered with farmsteads. North Dakota proudly ranks in the #1 position, of being the leader in production of Durum and Spring Wheat. Cass county, far eastern, North Dakota, is the largest producer of soy beans in the United States. Other crops raised in the state are as follows, sunflowers, rye, barley, edible beans, oats, flax seed, sugar beets, hay, beef, dairy cattle, sheep and hogs.

North Dakota is setting itself up right now to be in a great position a few years down the road. What I'm getting at is Alternative & Renewable Fuels. We have it all here in North Dakota. Experts claim we have over 800 years worth of coal to be extracted from the earth. Wind, well there is never a shortage of that here. The wind blows all the time, very consistent. Bio-diesel & ethanol, these two products have the potential for great success. We have to become less dependent on foreign oil! And we can do it. Oh yes, we can't forget Hydro-Electric Power, over 400,000 mega watts of power are produced at the Garrison Dam.

North Dakota is the northern most of the mid-western states. During the 19Th century, North Dakota was known as being part of the "Wild West". Fargo was considered an old west town way back when. North Dakota became the 39Th state in 1889, the same year South Dakota, Montana, and Washington became states. Bismark is the state capitol.

Western North Dakota is home to Medora and the "Badlands". The areas highest point in the state is known as White Butte and Theodore Roosevelt National Park is also located in this area of the state.Central North Dakota is home to the Drift Prairie and the Missouri Plateau. Lakes, streams, valleys and rolling hills make up the geographical appearance of the area. The Missouri River and Lake Sakakawea are also located in the central part of the state. The Turtle Mountains can be found to the north, near the Canadian border. The geographic center of North America is located near Rugby, North Dakota.
North Dakota Capitol Building

The government of North Dakota consists of a governor, who at this time is John Hoeven. We have two senators, Kent Conrad and Byron Dorgan and our congressman is Earl Pomeroy. The state has a bicameral legislature. The state elects 2 house representives and one senator from each of the 47 districts apportioned by population.

The legislation meets at the state capitol building, 80 day regular sessions in odd numbered years. This year, no session taking place. The major political party in the state is Republican. But with the way things are being run in the White House now, I can see this changing soon. There is a political buzz out there, and people are talking. Mid terms are coming soon. It's beginning to sound like the Democrats may get control of the helm again in Congress. The Republican party holds majorities in the state legislature. Since 1964 this state has carried Republican Presidential candidates, including George Bush in 2004. But, the dems have held on to the Senate and Congress seats since 1986.
