Minot, North Dakota
The Magic City
Minot, the Magic City, is located approx. 110 miles north of Bismark on Highway 83. It is the 4Th largest city in the state, with a population of about 36,500. Minot is also is the county seat of Ward County.
Minot is known as the trading center for a large portion of northern North Dakota and two provinces, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Many Canadians come here to shop and take advantage of the different rate in currency.
Minot was founded in 1886, three short years before statehood. The Mouse River divides the city in half, north an south. The valley rises to the plains both north and south of the river. This is where the names come from, North and South Hills.
In the early years Minot was a "boom town" typical of any western town of that era, with very little if any law prevailing. During prohibition, Minot was known as the "Little Chicago", as it was a main hub for Al Capone's liqueur smuggling. Tunnels were used back then to conceal the operations, and to this day some of the tunnels can be accessed. It was back in the 50's when the construction of the Minot Air Base, an Air Defense Command Base, later becoming Strategic Air Command bomber and minuteman missile base.
In 1969 a major flood devastated the city. The Souris (Mouse River)River, raised a lot of havoc, and destroyed lots of property. The Corps of Engineers came in and built flood control structures where needed.
Still in a tuff court battle, The Canadian Pacific Railway, having a terrible accident here in Minot on January 18, 2002, killing one and injuring many more. Cause was a huge cloud of anhydrous ammonia, a very toxic gas, drifting around in the area. Three major highways run through or around Minot. Highways US 83, US 52, and US 2, all being major routes in and out of the city. Amtraks "Empire Builder" is making Minot a daily stop West bound trains arrive 9:00 AM and eastbound trains arrive at 9:00 PM. Minot also has air service, Minot International Airport, Served by Northwest Airlines three times daily.
Minot has lots of things happening different times of the year. In July we have the North Dakota State fair in Minot. Lots big name entertainment, carnival, agriculture, and many more events for everyone. Coming October 11 thru the 14 is the Norsk Hostfest. Lots big name entertainment, including, Liza Minnelli, Neil Sedaka, Georges Jones and Terry Clark.
Minot uses council-manager system of government. 14 councilman (council woman) elected, from 7 city wards, to four year terms. The mayor also has four year terms. Overall Minot's economy is doing very well because of the service area. Although there is a problem with wages and enterprise capitol, many of the residents here have to hold down two jobs, just to make ends meet.
Minot has two sister cities, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and Skein, Norway. Minot and Skein both being Telemarketing centers. Moose Jaw and Minot resemble each other in many ways. Population wise Moose Jaw has 35,000 residents Minot around 36,500. Both places Education Systems are great and they both are military bases.
Minot operates 17 parks in the system. Corbett Field is the home to Legion Baseball also high school and college baseball. The Sertoma Center has 8 softball fields, we have the MAYSA ice arena, and Sauris Valley Golf Course.
The public school system has 10 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and one high school on two campuses. There is also 2 elementary schools on the airbase. As far as private schools we have the Catholic School System with 2 elementary schools and a combined middle and high school. Minot State University also makes its home here. There is also a protestant school system K - 12, Our Redeemer's Christian School.
There is plenty of things to do in Minot. There is the Roosevelt Park Zoo, one of the best zoo's around. A ballpark for dogs opened up recently here in Minot. Two golf courses available for play, they are, Apple Grove Golf Course and Souris Golf Course.
