Canoeing & Kayaking North Dakota
Canoeing and kayaking North Dakota rivers could be an experience of a lifetime. Through out our state there are rivers for everyone to enjoy, no matter where you may be. Make it a family experience, everyone will remember for a long time, explore the rivers our great state of North Dakota has to offer.
Little Missouri River Being designated as the states only State Scenic River, The Little Missouri winds thru the Badlands and it's surrounding splendor. The river winds through Sully Creek State Recreation Area, Little Missouri National Grasslands, and the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. For 274 miles, winding through the buttes, plateaus and ravines, this is an awesome place for canoeists to enjoy and relax in the serenity of Western North Dakota outdoors.
Missouri River Canoeing here on the Missouri, offers a scenic route for everyone to enjoy. Sandbars are evident along the route once explored by Lewis and Clark. 83 miles long, this can be a canoeing experience that will be talked about for a long time.
Mouse River (Souris) Bordered by three National Wildlife Refuges, the Mouse River has an abundant of wildlife for everyone to enjoy on there voyage down stream, or upstream. Two of the refuges have canoe trails for canoe enthusiasts, ranging from 3 miles to 13 miles long. While here check-out the bow-shaped bends in the river, well worth the time to checkout.
Pembina River For 70 miles, you can wind through the valleys in the Pembina Gorge, through forested areas and the agriculture rich area of northeast North Dakota. This is nature at its finest, come and enjoy.
Red River The Grand-Daddy of rivers for canoeing activities is the Red River of the North. Separating Minnesota and North Dakota, this river runs through the heart of the richest farmland in America. Winding through grasslands and forests this river runs for 304 miles, making for an adventure you won't soon forget. Abundant wildlife along the scenic journey down or up, The Red River of the North.
Sheyenne River The Sheyenne River, a Canoeists haven. The river winds though the open prairies, oak forests, and thru the riches of agricultural land. Winding on for 278 miles this river is a paradise for the canoeing enthusiast. Fort Ransom State Park offers canoe and kayak rentals. Fall offers a beauty of colors for all to enjoy while traveling on the Sheyenne River. Deep reds, golden yellows, and vibrant orange colors is at it's finest mid-late September, going into first week or so into October. Much of the time frame is decided by how early and how many frosts we have.
